To quote the late, great James Brown
This class is going to be a new topic that Tyler from Red Rokk turned me onto, Edgerank. The interesting thing is Edgerank is a pretty controversial idea these days, because some people think it’s dead. So if it’s dead, why are we talking about it and what is it anyway?
Edgerank is what Facebook at one time called the algorithm that decides what appears in your Newsfeed. Kind of like Google with their Pandas, Hummingbirds and KitKats. Here it is as explained by Batman (srsly).
For a little more detail and a little less cosplay, check out this blog post about how to improve your position in your followers Newsfeeds.
This summer, however, there was a lot of gnashing of teeth about the “death” of Edgerank.
Here is Facebook’s response to the issue.
One of the interesting things for me, is that I first started hearing about all of this last year thanks to Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban.
(Speaking of the NBA, the Celtics have won four in a row, including a road win at the Heat!)
Does Cuban have a point? Here are a couple of opinions.
So for your blogs for Thursday consider a couple of things:
- If your boss, or client said to you next month “We need to improve our performance on Facebook. What should we do?” What would you tell her?
- What is Mark Cuban complaining about? Does he have a point?
See you in a bit.
